Gion Incense is a sacred incense oil perfume built around sandalwood, cedarwood, orris butter, and ambergris. It opens with the warmth of sandalwood and cedarwood, revealing a heart of soft orris butter, before settling into a deep, meditative base of ambergris — evoking the incense-filled air of a Buddhist temple in Gion.
Handcrafted in Canada by perfumer Matthew Meleg, Gion Incense is made in small batches using 100% natural materials, personally gifted to the maiko and geisha of Kyoto’s Gion district. Each bottle is blended, aged, and finished with the care of an artisan perfume house.

I managed my families "Meleg's Orchard," in a small south Ontario town until I was 25. The orchard started with Sam Meleg, a Slovak from the Provence of Vojvodina, former Kingdom of Serbia of the Austro Hungarian Empire. My work ethic, self deprecating humour and stubborn nature is reflective of my Slovak, peasant roots.
Here my cousins are laying crops into the "apple bin." My wooden perfume box is meant to represent apple bins. Be they rose, vetiver or jasmine farmers. Be they from India, Mexico, Canada or Iran - Meleg Perfumes celebrates farmers and artisans of all nations.
